Print Every Order Automatically, Even on a Cheap Bluetooth Printer

A new order on a screen is easy to miss when the kitchen is busy. A ticket that prints itself is not. OrderPoint now prints kitchen tickets and customer receipts for every order, and it can do it automatically on a tablet with an inexpensive receipt printer.

What you can print

  • Kitchen ticket: order number, dine-in table, pick-up or delivery, every item with its options and add-ons, and the customer's notes in a box the cook can't miss. No prices.
  • Customer receipt: the same order with prices, tax, delivery charge, discount, total and payment method.
  • Any order, any time: website, QR menu and POS orders all have print buttons, so you can reprint a ticket an hour later.
  • 58 mm or 80 mm paper, and menus in French, English or Arabic print correctly, accents and right-to-left text included.

Automatic printing

Switch on auto-print on the tablet next to your printer, and every new order prints within about 20 seconds. Online orders print once the payment has gone through; cash and pay-on-delivery orders print straight away. If two devices have auto-print on, each order still prints only once. If the printer is off or out of paper, the order waits in the queue and staff see a warning, so nothing is lost.

Three ways to connect a printer

  1. The OrderPoint Android app (recommended for low-cost printers). Install the app on an Android tablet, then choose your printer: Bluetooth, USB or network (Wi-Fi/LAN). It prints silently, with no print dialog, to almost any ESC/POS receipt printer, including the inexpensive Xprinter and unbranded models sold in most local shops.
  2. An Epson network printer, from any browser. Epson TM printers with ePOS-Print (for example TM-T20III, TM-m30 or TM-T88) print silently from Chrome on a tablet or PC, and also from an iPad.
  3. Any printer your computer already uses. Tickets open the normal print dialog. This is fine at a front desk, but too slow for a busy kitchen.

Choosing a cheap printer that works

  • Look for "ESC/POS" in the description. Almost every thermal receipt printer supports it.
  • 80 mm for the kitchen (bigger text, usually with an auto-cutter); 58 mm for small counters and portable printers.
  • Bluetooth printers must support classic Bluetooth (SPP), which most receipt printers do. Avoid "mini photo" or sticker printers that only work with their own phone app.
  • Network printers are the most reliable for a kitchen: no pairing, no range issues. Give the printer a fixed IP address on your router.
  • Buy thermal paper of the right width. These printers need no ink.

Set it up in five minutes

  1. Install the OrderPoint Android app on the kitchen tablet and log in. Android will ask you to allow installing apps from your browser the first time.
  2. Pair a Bluetooth printer in Android's Bluetooth settings, or plug in a USB printer, or connect a network printer to your Wi-Fi.
  3. In the dashboard, open Order Management › Settings › Printing, tap Choose printer, then pick your printer and paper width.
  4. Tap Print a test ticket.
  5. Switch on Automatically print new orders on this device, and keep the dashboard open on that tablet. The app keeps the screen on for you.

Keep the kitchen tablet awake

While auto-print is on, the OrderPoint app keeps the screen on by itself. Three simple habits make it reliable through a whole service:

  1. Keep the tablet plugged in. A flat battery is the most common reason a ticket doesn't print.
  2. Pin the app (Android Settings › Security › App pinning). The tablet then stays on OrderPoint until someone unpins it, so nobody switches to another app by accident.
  3. Optional: turn on Stay awake while charging in Android's Developer options as a backup.

Avoid pressing the power button on the kitchen tablet: Android always lets it turn the screen off.
